Tire Chip Project: Robbinsdale, Minnesota, (Road)
Shredded tires or "Tire Chips" were the chosen material to be used as a soil correction media in front of City Hall in the City of Robbinsdale.
Tire Chips are light weight, weighing only 540 lbs per cubic yard before consolidation. The void space after consolidation is over 50%. Tire chips have 8 times the insulating value of soil and do not wick or hold moisture, therefore inhibiting frost heaving.
A geo fabric is used as a separation barrier to keep the sand cover material from infiltrating into the void spaces between the tire chips. A minimum 18" cover aggregate material is placed on top of the tire chips to fully consolidate the chips.
After covering and consolidation of tire chips, the curb and gutter were immediately poured.

Four years after completion, there have been no repairs needed on this street as compared to the yearly patching required before tire chips were in place.
