Shredded tires or "Tire Chips" were the chosen material to be used as a soil correction media in front of City Hall in the City of Robbinsdale. |
Tire Chips are light weight, weighing only 540 lbs per cubic yard before consolidation. The void space after consolidation is over 50%. Tire chips have 8 times the insulating value of soil and do not wick or hold moisture, therefore inhibiting frost heaving. |
A geo fabric is used as a separation barrier to keep the sand cover material from infiltrating into the void spaces between the tire chips. A minimum 18" cover aggregate material is placed on top of the tire chips to fully consolidate the chips. |
After covering and consolidation of tire chips, the curb and gutter were immediately poured. |
