County Road 6 had a settling problem caused by drainage problems and soil conditions. This caused surface failures for many years on the side slopes of CR6 at this location.

Carlton County has used tire chips several times over the last decade and opted to use tire chips on the 500' side slope to address the lateral movement of the embankment.

Once in place, the tire chips are compacted with a tracked vehicle until proper compaction is achieved.

Common borrow with a high percentage of binding clay is placed over the tire chips (no geo fabric was used).

A minimum of 12" of cover material is placed over the tire chips on side slope applications such as this.
